THE STORY BEHIND ATOMIC JUNCTION EXPLOSION
The twin explosion which occurred at the Atomic Junction on 7th October, 2017, had many concerns raised once again, as it was the eighth to have occurred in the past three years. Most of the issues are directed at the planning regulations and policies to control the development of these filling stations, but there is more to that. GhanaCompares.com blog team is here to update you.
What about the lives lost? What about the medical bills? What about the damaged property?
According to George Owusu, the owner of MANSCO Gas Ltd, he has lost millions of dollars. The question then arises – did he have it insured? How about the people whose properties were also affected by the fire? And the people who got injured and even died? Will they or their surviving members receive any form of benefit or compensation in the form of an insurance claim? Did any of the parties involved have an insurance cover on whatever was affected by this fire?
You will realise that filling stations are not necessarily buildings, so if a person is to go for an insurance cover, it would be advisable to go for a Business Insurance cover. He possibly could have gone in for a Liability cover as well, seeing that people may have been injured on his property. How about Vehicle insurance? Fire and Allied Perils, or Fire Only insurance policies?
What about the people who were not necessarily on the premises but were still affected? Car owners. They may have had insurance, but if it was Third Party Only, what benefit could they have received if their cars were damaged by the fire?
There were also traders at the scene who may have escaped, but not without their property. Did they already have some form of insurance cover for their small scale businesses?
The topic of insurance still may raise questions and doubts in the minds of people, but to be a victim of a disaster such as this and not having a form of support to help you bounce back to work could be a worse situation than making sacrifices to manage a risk and in the end, never having to face an accident or disaster. You will just have to be advised properly and make sure that you understand everything you are signing up for. With everything done the right way, the odds are most likely to be in your favour!
